Pacific Coast Highway
Another iconic route that has gained a reputation as one of the best drives in the United States and has another route that has a famous song dedicated to it (this time by The Mamas and the Papas) is the legendary Pacific Coast Highway.
Although it takes approximately 10 hours to traverse the 900 kilometers (600 miles) that hug the rugged Californian coastline, it’s highly recommended you take your sweet time.
Why? Because this American road trip destination is considered to be one of the most beautifully scenic roads not just in America, but in the world.
Plus, your trip along this amazing route will allow you to experience the best California has to offer with pioneer outposts, surfing villages, farm-fresh foods, local wine, roadside kitsch, Hollywood glitz, and bohemia.

I have been on all these routes but you missed including Rocky Mountain National Park!
Great article but could you mention the state(s) that the following roadtrips cover?
1) Historic Columbia River Highway, 2) Red Rock country
My daughter and grand daughter just drove back and forth across RED ROCK COUNTRY. FROM THE GRAND CANYON TO SEDONA TO WINSLOW( stood on the corner with statues singing “Standing on the corner in Winslow Az “ ) and back to Flagstaff.
Ye, I was missing that too. (the states)
Took my first trip on Rt 66 in 1961 as we moved from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles. I am planning on another trip this coming year. I look forward to the painted desert and the petrified forest, I still have Glacier Part in Montana to traverse. Why go overseas?
My best friend and I have always loved road trips. This list gives us more destinations that we haven’t seen yet!
