Route 66
So, let’s start with the granddaddy of all road trip adventures, the iconic Route 66. Also known as the Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America, or the Mother Road, This stretch of pure Americana is an eye-popping 2, 451 miles (3, 945 Kilometers) from Chicago to Los Angeles, but sadly it has seen many changes since it was assigned the numerical designation 66 on April 30, 1926.
And although it has now been replaced with a new Interstate highway system to reduce time and travel distance, what can’t be replaced is its place in American history.
This American road trip destination is contrasted with vast desolate desert plains and stunning old highway towns and remains just as popular today as it was when Bobby Troup composed his popular rhythm and blues song back in 1946.

I have been on all these routes but you missed including Rocky Mountain National Park!
Great article but could you mention the state(s) that the following roadtrips cover?
1) Historic Columbia River Highway, 2) Red Rock country
My daughter and grand daughter just drove back and forth across RED ROCK COUNTRY. FROM THE GRAND CANYON TO SEDONA TO WINSLOW( stood on the corner with statues singing “Standing on the corner in Winslow Az “ ) and back to Flagstaff.
Ye, I was missing that too. (the states)
Took my first trip on Rt 66 in 1961 as we moved from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles. I am planning on another trip this coming year. I look forward to the painted desert and the petrified forest, I still have Glacier Part in Montana to traverse. Why go overseas?
My best friend and I have always loved road trips. This list gives us more destinations that we haven’t seen yet!
