West Virginia State Capitol, Charleston
Of all the US State Capitol buildings, the one in West Virginia may be one of the best designed. It’s the result of Thomas Jefferson, who wanted to model the capitol after a Roman temple in France.
Over time it has since been expanded, only adding to its luxury within the Capitol Square of Richmond. It was finally completed in 1932, with its wings being added later.
It’s built in a traditional classical revival style and proudly displays towering white columns to welcome visitors to its entrance. While in the area, it’s hard not to stop and marvel at the building’s beauty while passing by, but fortunately, it’s open to the public for tours of its interior.
The tour allows visitors to explore the rich history of the building and the state itself. Inside, you’ll find several works of art and sculptures, including a famous statue of George Washington.
