Poet, visionary and thinker Rabindranath Tagore created the university town of Santiniketan. Situated 160 km from Kolkata in Bolpur, this place was conceived as an abode of learning, art and culture. Visit Tagore’s Ashram which has many individual buildings replete with interesting history and displays.

Sit under the Chattimala, a prayer area under a Chattim tree where Tagore’s father, Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, used to meditate. The Viswa-Bharati University in Santiniketan was built on India’s ancient gurukul system founded in 1921 and is still running strong on its foundational vision. The campus is also home to art, including sculptures, paintings and murals, by Tagore. Also visit Kala Bhavan which houses many famous sculptures and Rabindra Bhavan, which has Tagore’s original manuscripts, letters, photographs and paintings.
