‘Tasteful’ and ‘theme park’ might seem at first glance to be mutually exclusive terms, but Efteling manages combine the two admirably. This park 50 miles south of Amsterdam opened back in 1952 with attractions inspired by ancient myths and folklore. Smaller guests can go hunting for Red Riding Hood in ancient woodland or board a flying pig at the century-old steam carousel.

For older children there are more daring attractions; including a snake-shaped rollercoaster, a ghost ship and bobsleigh rides. Accommodations range from charming clapboard houses beside a secluded lake, to winsome hotel rooms featuring touches like board game tables and writing quills, should small guests be inspired to pen their own fantastical tales.
