Home to one of the world’s most famous monuments, the Taj Mahal, Agra is undeniably one of the most historically rich places in northern India. However, besides the Taj, there are a lot more places that contribute to the legendary stories that prevail in the city. Being a centre of the Mughal empire for around 130 years, it has preserved its history and legends.
Besides the Taj, the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri are also UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Situated just across a bend of the river from the Taj, Agra Fort offers a beautiful view of the Taj Mahal. Fatehpur Sikri, on the other hand, was the capital of the Mughal empire for a short while and was abandoned after Akbar’s death. It is just 40 km from Agra and a day trip can be easily arranged. Also visit Akbar’s Tomb, situated on the outskirts of Agra, which was built to commemorate the great Mughal emperor.
