Train Tour: Mount Washington Cog

Beginning at the Marshfield Base Station in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, the Mount Washington Cog Railway, AKA “The Cog,” ascends approximately 3,500ft up to the highest summit in the region.

As you can probably guess, this is the most abrupt railway track in our country and the second steepest in the world. So if you have a fear of heights, this train tour might not necessarily be for you.

A one-hour break at the summit provides you with breathtaking views of New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, and Canada, as well as the Atlantic Ocean from the Mount Washington Observatory. So make sure to pack your camera for this one.

You can also browse the museum and gift shops. And you can even send yourself or loved ones a postcard from their very own post office! Even though there’s only one way up and down, you get to choose between riding on a biodiesel or a steam locomotive.

So are you ready for a train tour? Leave us a comment in the section below, and share your thoughts with us!

    1. Hello! Thank you so much for all of your interest. Unfortunately, we aren’t able to help you book any tours on these wonderful trains because we aren’t a travel agency. Our site offers information about many magnificent places to help you decide your next getaway. But we don’t have access to the train tours or packages you see in this article. I live in Austin Texas and raising my 13 year old grandson. I have never ridden a train a long distance and would love for both he and I to have that experience. What suggestions would you make for our experience to be enjoyable?

    1. Hello Geraldine! Considering there are MANY beautiful options in the US, we recommend choosing a train tour that best suits your needs and interests. But no matter which one you pick, be sure to check the weather forecast during that time period as to avoid any unpleasant surprises. We hope you and your grandson have a fun trip!

    1. Hello Katalin! Thank you for your interest. Your best option would be to check with the Amtrak website to view their schedules and packages.

The Mount Washington Cog sounds like an amazing idea for my upcoming Birthday on December 9. Please send pricing information. Thanks

    1. It is not likely that the cog railway will run on December 9th as the summit of Mt. Washington, which has recorded the lowest temps and highest wind velocity in the continental US. It s possible to hike it in December, but you must be very experienced, well equipped, and have experienced artic-weather hikers with you, have satelite radios and the good sense to TURN BACK when the weather worsens. There have been several deaths on that mountain this winter alone, and near 200 in all have perished there over the years.

  12. 1) Rocky Mountaineer!! We did a trip from Banff National Park to Vancouver. We departed th train in Jasper, stayed overnight and then took a bus trip from Jasper to Banff. Made stops along the way including Lake Louise in Alberta. Was an unforgettable experience!!
    2) The cog train on Mt Washington was also great. The train was fun and when we arrived on the top of the mountain it was a windy experience. Be sure to bring someone to hang on to

Great tours but you missed two. Both are steam narrow gauge, one in S.E. Colorado, the other in S.W. Colorado. The Cumbres and Toltec in the East, the Durango and Silverton in the West.

Both are usually day-long. Absolute tremendous scenery.

  19. Thomas P Mishoe

Interested in making tours without the airports, airplane schedules. Long terminals. Mid-seventies couple wants to relax and enjoy the scenery. Too old for hiking or too much exertion.

  20. Reminds my of the 11 day Amtrak train trip I took my graduating high school senior on. We live in Northwest Arkansas. We got on in Little Rock Arkansas. Little Rock to La…La to Portland…Portland to Chicago…Chicago back to Little Rock. An amazing journey that I would do again without hesitation and recommend to any one that enjoys train travel. 😊👍

  21. Harryette E. Burnette

These all sound wonderful except the one regarding the extreme heights; I think that one would be out because I do have panic attacks when go up high. Sadly, you never mentioned any cost factors throughout the tour of looking through the various trips. We would have to know up front what a complete trip would probable cost & then figure the amount of cash we’d want to have for spending. Since we are retired seniors and live strictly on our retirement social security, that would all have to be figured in advance of booking. I will appreciate any feedback you can send and will thank you kindly.

Hope all of your team are having a great summer & trying to keep cool.

    Sincerely, Harryette Elaine Miller Burnette

  22. Would like a trip from W. coast to E. coast across the NORTHERN route …then return Southern route back to Oregon…

  23. This trip sounds great! I live in Jacksonville Fl, I would have to fly to Nashville Tn. How much is the train tour? What is the length of this trip? Are there any stops along the way to Pigeon Forge> I have been to Pigeon Forge many times and love it there.

    1. Hello Joyce! Unfortunately, we don’t have any information regarding pricing of any of these train tours. A travel agency in your area may be able to help you out. And we agree with you about Pigeon Forge! It’s beautiful. One of our favorite stops is the Titanic Museum!

  24. We would like to take the train trip from new orleans north to tennessee, in january, february or March. 2025 Could you please send me information.

    1. Hello Gary. Thank you so much for your interest. Unfortunately, we’re not a travel agency. We just love traveling and exploring the most beautiful places we can find. If you’re looking for ideas for your next trip, let us know which part of the world you’ll be visiting, and Must See Places can fill you in on the best spots. We might even know a few tips and tricks to make your vacation more memorable!

    1. Hello Alisa, we’re sorry but Must See Places is not a travel agency. Our writers have been to many incredible locations. And while we can talk a lot about OUR favorites, we can’t help you book any tours.

    1. Hi Karin! There’s a Canadian Rockies train tour that starts in Seattle. But your best bet would be to contact a travel agency. They can probably book your trip and offer some more details.

    1. Hello Yolanda, as far as we know, many of them also have exploring opportunities. But we recommend contacting a travel agent to get all the information you’re looking for.
