Weekend Escape: Lake Placid, New York
This upstate village in New York has hosted the Olympic games twice, in 1932 and 1980, and it was in the 1980 version that the Miracle on Ice team made hockey history.
You can take a stroll around the village to soak up the culture of the Adirondacks and see the 7,700-seat Herb Brooks Arena, the charming building where Brooks coached the hockey team to the gold medal.
The arena is currently undergoing renovations, but artifacts from the Olympic Museum are available for free.
Hiking is also a great option here at Mt. Van Hoevenberg, which hosted the cross-country competition back in 1980, and biking or walking around the beautiful 3-mile Mirror Lake.
