“Small Town America” is a whole world in and of itself. Sleepy coastal towns, forgotten desert villages, and colonial New England communities are just a couple of things that come to mind when we hear the word “charming small towns.”

Due to its highly diverse landscape, population, and culture, our beautiful nation is home to an abundance of quirky and unique small towns. But where do you even begin to choose?

Well, we decided to take some time and research YOUR comments for the ones that best fit the bill…Whether your idea of charming small towns equals a mountain village, a harbor town, an old rail city, or something else entirely, it’s probably on this list!

Solvang, California

If you’ve been dreaming about a European trip, you don’t have to go all the way across the ocean to get your fix. Solvang is well-known as the “Danish Capital of America.”

This charming small town in California’s Santa Ynez Valley will make you feel like you’ve just stepped into Denmark.

Due to its convenient location, this quaint destination makes the perfect stop on a road trip between San Francisco and LA or a half-day trip from Santa Barbara.

And it’s easy to combine with other destinations in the Santa Ynez Valley, including Santa Ynez or Los Olivos.

While here, don’t forget to stop by one of the town’s famous bakeries, get your fill of those delicious Danish pastries, and then stroll around the many old-world-style boutiques.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas

If you decide to visit, you’ll be greeted with Victorian homes and shops, plenty of nature opportunities, treehouses, and its entire downtown area can be found on the National Register of Historic Places.

Many artists work in Eureka Springs studios and sell their pieces to the public.

Unalaska, Alaska

Unalaska has a long and exciting history at the center of the Aleutian Islands. From the earliest inhabitants nine thousand years ago to its role in World War II and to the Russian fur traders who made this place their base, there are lots of places to explore on the island.

You’ll also glimpse many beautiful views from natural viewpoints and remote spots. All that history means outdoor monuments, excellent museums, and sites dedicated to Unalaska’s yesteryear. If you’re a nature lover, you won’t be disappointed.

Jackson, Wyoming

Located in the valley between the Gros Centre Range and the Tetons, this charming small town is the perfect outdoorsy place to visit. You can walk under the town square’s famous antler frame and take in the spectacular old-west scenery.

Nature lovers will treasure the trails that guide you to alpine meadows and crystal-clear lakes. And since you’re already here, don’t forget to grab a beer at any of their small-town taphouses. Everyone will make you feel at home, no matter which establishment you step into!

Telluride, Colorado

We all know the main reason for visiting Telluride, right? Its world-class ski slopes! This charming small town is dominated by Telluride Ski Resort, which encompasses over 2,000 skiable acres.

But if you decide to visit in the warmer months, you can enjoy spectacular views of the San Juan Mountains from one of the area’s incredibly photogenic hiking paths, including Jud Wiebe Trail and Bear Creek Trail.

You can even experience all this on an off-road adventure in a high-clearance vehicle to the Ophir Pass summit or while driving along the San Juan Skyway. Telluride is a wonderfully walkable mountain town, so don’t worry if you don’t have a car for your vacation.

You can spend some time strolling around, browsing the boutiques, and trying out award-winning restaurants on Colorado Avenue, which is lined with beautiful historic Victorian buildings. So pack some comfy walking shoes!

Even more jaw-dropping mountain views await you on the free gondola ride from town up to Mountain Village, which is a European-style, pedestrian-friendly resort town that also offers plenty of shopping and dining opportunities for travelers.

Remember that you’ll avoid crowds if you choose to visit during the spring and fall. And some attractions, like the Telluride Historical Museum and gondola, are closed during the quieter months.
