We don’t have to travel very far to find ourselves on one of the most beautiful affordable islands in the continental US. So forget the luxury resorts on international beaches. You don’t need to travel far for an affordable island vacation!

From tropical destinations that are a quick drive away to hidden gems you can fly to and laidback islands that ban automobiles altogether, there are a bunch of islands in our country for a memorable vacation.

We’ve decided to share our 5 favorite affordable islands in the country for a great getaway on a lower budget.

Mount Desert Island, Maine

For a continental island getaway that’s a bit more rustic than tropical, you should check out Maine’s Mt. Desert Island.

It’s home to Acadia National Park and the charming town of Bar Harbor, and it’s easy to see why this state’s largest affordable island has been attracting tenants like Martha Stewart.

You can explore some of the most beautiful scenery the area has to offer by taking a stroll on the Ocean Path, a four-mile journey extending from Sand Beach to the 110ft high Otter Cliff, one of the most elevated coastal headlands north of Rio.

Afterward, you’ll want to reward yourself by stocking up on locally-made chocolates at The Chocolate Moose Confectionery.

San Juan Island, Washington

You don’t have to visit British Columbia to be able to see killer whales in their natural habitat. A pod of orcas lives in the San Juan Islands archipelago all year round, just off the northwest coast of the state of Washington.

You can catch a glimpse of these giant, black-and-white mammals from Lime Kiln Point State Park on San Juan Island…Or better yet, how about from a kayak? And if whales aren’t your cup of tea, there’s plenty of biking, hiking, and fishing that will keep you entertained.

Folks who prefer a more leisurely visit will find delicious farm-to-table meals, galleries, delectable wine from Washington State, and spas.

Amelia Island, Florida

Right off the coast of northeast Florida lies Amelia Island, a barrier island rich in natural beauty and history. It’s the only US location once ruled by eight different countries.

It offers its visitors a glance at a Civil War–era fort, stunning Victorian mansions, and Florida’s oldest saloon and lighthouse. Meanwhile, its sandy shores boast osprey, dolphins, nesting sea turtles, and the endangered right whale.

Each March, the Amelia Concours d’Elegance amazes classic car collectors. And in May, a festival celebrates its historic shrimp industry. So make sure you grab a plate.

Absorb some of the affordable island’s history by touring the 50-block historical landmark district by horse-drawn carriage, which you’ll have to pre-book through Old Towne Carriage Company.

Then, unwind with some traditional afternoon tea and homemade scones or crumpets at the Hoyt Bed & Breakfast, a Victorian mansion that is 115 years old.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Looking for an affordable tropical island in the US? You won’t be needing a passport to visit this tropical paradise, where you’ll enjoy stunning beaches, lush jungles, delicious food, and plenty of things to do.

While you’ll find plenty of expensive luxury resorts all around the affordable island, there are plenty of ways to enjoy a budget vacation to Puerto Rico without sacrificing the experience.

Choose a destination closer to an international airport – for many travelers, this will mean sticking closer to San Juan.

If you’re looking for a beachy vacation in San Juan, stay in Condado or Ocean Park, where you’ll be within walking distance of beautiful beaches, plus great cafes and restaurants.

Or, staying in Old San Juan is a great choice for a mix of great food, cool bars and cafes, and all the historical sites.

Puerto Rico is much more than just San Juan, so if your budget allows for it, make sure to get out of the city and visit the El Yunque rainforest, some of the affordable island’s other beautiful beaches, and even the neighboring islands of Vieques and Culebra.

Both of these islands in the US that are among the best in the Caribbean.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

This long chain of barrier islands runs from Eastern Virginia into North Carolina and is a beach lover’s dream. While accommodations in the Outer Banks aren’t the cheapest, almost everything else is!

Choose Corolla Beach; if you’re lucky, you’ll see some wild Spanish mustangs roaming the islands.

Some of the most extraordinary things here include kayaking through the salt marshes (don’t forget your camera) and scouring the charming beach towns for the most fantastic seafood.

There are also many lighthouses up and down the coast where the entrance is either free or costs very little. A little locally known secret for travelers is that the further north you go in the Outer Banks, the more expensive it can be.

So stick to the south, and enjoy an affordable getaway! This area can be one of the best affordable islands in our country if you plan your trip accordingly!
