Cromer on the Norfolk Coast has always been a resort built on a smaller scale than the likes of Blackpool and Brighton, but on 1 January it lights up the sky with the best of them. Reflections off the North Sea add a special dimension to the blazing trails and starbursts over Cromer Pier – a dignified design from 1901. After a fun run along the promenade, spectators gather on the sands or along the clifftops to watch. There’s an ‘end of the line’ feel to Cromer, and the show’s impact is all the greater for being far from city lights, on the border of land and sea.
