St Regis New York opened in 1904 as a meeting ground for Manhattan high society: a place where the Astor 400 — the city’s social elite, hand-picked by Caroline Astor — could enjoy the luxury and comfort of a private home. Her son and founder of the hotel John Jacob Astor IV, spared no expense in creating supreme luxury: from marble floors and crystal chandeliers to antique Louis XV furniture, oriental rugs and a library of 3,000 leather-bound, gold-tooled books (many of which came from his personal collection).
