FUNDACION CESAR MANRIQUE
This gallery, just north of Arrecife, was home to celebrated Lanzarote architect Cesar Manrique. He built his house, Taro de Tahiche, into the lava fields; its subterranean rooms are huge air bubbles left behind by flowing lava. There’s a Manrique gallery, plus minor works by Picasso and Miro.
MUSEO DE LA PIRATERIA
A fascinating museum in Teguise’s imposing 16th-century Castillo de Santa Barbara. This is the Canaries’ oldest castle, perched on Guanapay peak with sweeping views across the plains. Exhibits detail the numerous pirate attacks Lanzarote suffered during the 16th century, when Teguise was the capital.
PARQUE NACIONAL DE TlMANFAYA
This otherworldly 20-square-mile national park was formed by an 18th-century volcanic eruption. Fine copper-hued soil slithers down volcanic cones to solidified lava mounds. A Manrique-designed lookout sits on the Islote de Hilariorise. Pre-booked guided walks leave from the Mancha Blanca Visitor Centre.
LA CANTINA
Run by an enthusiastic English couple, this restaurant is in one of the island’s oldest houses, dating back 500 years. Local products feature heavily; try a shared platter of local cheese, papas arrugadas, gofio and mojo.
SHOP IN HARIA
