While South Africans welcome summer, our friends in the northern hemisphere are readying themselves for some chilly action. Quebec in Canada is the home of ice canoeing. This unusual sport was originally a means of transport when too much ice prevented ferries from crossing the St Lawrence River.
Today ice canoeing is a competitive sport which involves crews of five. Teams have to alternate between pushing their canoes across icy parts of the river and rowing against currents, tides and ice blocks blown furiously towards them! So if you’re going to Canada, try it out on an ice canoe excursion (offered by Quebec Ice Canoeing).
