Europe, Here We Come!

If you’ve always dreamt of jet-setting to Europe, but worry about your bank account taking a hit, don’t worry. For every expensive city out there, dozens of charming and affordable locations offer all the charm but for a fraction of the price.

You can even travel to some of the continent’s most famously expensive destinations without breaking the bank. And no, you won’t have to sacrifice your experiences.

Many budget airlines can take you to cities with stunning architecture, rich culture, and delicious food that you’d find in pricey European capitals, but they’re also perfect for travelers on a budget.

Those large cities also offer a wide range of accommodations, so there’s something for everyone. You can even save money on food by visiting the local markets.

After all, some fresh bread, a bottle of wine, and cheese from a Parisian market make for an extraordinary meal when you’re picnicking under the Eiffel Tower. And you might even be surprised by how many attractions are free or inexpensive to visit.

Trimming your budget doesn’t mean sacrificing the quality of your trip. Sometimes, the less you spend, the more you can immerse yourself in the local culture. Here are 5 of our favorite affordable European vacations to add to your bucket list!

Bosnia-Herzegovina

Sadly, most people still associate this country primarily with the war that occurred there almost 30 years ago. But this Balkan beauty located next to Croatia has gotten back on its feet in all that time, and it has so much to offer tourists willing to give it a chance.

The Medieval town of Mostar, for instance, is a true highlight. Its famous bridge is what once connected trade routes as far as Constantinople and Venice.

You’ll likely also be very impressed by the country’s capital: Sarajevo. The locals offer genuine warmth, exciting architecture, and an incredible historic quarter. It’s delightfully friendly on your wallet and one of Europe’s most genuinely underrated capitals.

Albania

Some say that this is one of the most underrated countries in Europe. But for now, it remains an under-the-radar gem. This country’s unspoiled coastline, well-preserved Ottoman-era towns, unique capital, and exceptional Alps offer visitors many reasons to explore it.

You can learn about the fascinating history of this once-isolated country, which was dubbed during the Cold War as the “North Korea” of Europe. Nowadays, it’s a democracy in development, and its improved infrastructure has made Albania much easier to travel to.

Oh, and did we mention that it might very well be one of the most budget-friendly destinations in Europe? You can easily find low-cost hotel rooms for roughly $25. The Albanian food is also excellent, and a delicious lunch or dinner will cost you around $2 to $4.

Czech Republic

This is another often overlooked city, even by Europeans. It’s culturally vibrant, and the warm locals make it a “Must-See” if you’re looking to explore Eastern Europe. You’ll find accommodations here at about $25-30 per night.

And the architecture is stunning and diverse, with many modernist builds like Villa Tugendhat from the 30s. You can also check out the historic sites like the medieval Špilberk Castle, which used to be a prison back in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Nowadays it’s a museum, be sure to see the lookout tower while here. Another unusual sight is the tunnels underneath the Cabbage Market. It was built for storing food and was also used as a hiding place during times of war.

People have preconceived notions about this Eastern European country. Only when they visit do they realize that it’s simply incredible. Like the way it inspired Bram Stoker, the spectacular Transylvanian region has lots for you to sink your teeth into!

You’ll be greeted by ancient fortified churches, charming medieval towns, and the awe-inspiring Carpathian mountain range. It’s ideal as a spring or summer destination but equally captivating in the wintertime, with budget-friendly ski resorts and snow-capped castles.

You can find adorable little Bed and Breakfasts starting at about $30 a night. And if you’re a history lover, be sure to check out Bucharest’s Palace of Parliament, which holds the title of the world’s largest administrative building.

Indoor tours of the property are available at around $10. And because this country remains a relatively under-the-radar destination, crowds won’t be a significant issue.

France

It’s no secret that Paris can be pretty pricey and frequently appears on the “World’s Most Expensive Cities” lists. But with a bit of smart planning, you can pamper yourself in the city without putting a massive dent in your wallet.

There are many budget-friendly historic mansions you can stay in. And while here, you can dine on gourmet cuisine, stroll along the Seine to take some memorable pics, and be amazed at how affordable this European capital can be for travelers on a budget.

Of course, the city fills up fast during peak seasons. So avoid holidays and weekends in the spring and summertime. But if you dash off to Paris mid-week in May, you’ll be glad you did. Just remember that the further in advance you book your stay, the better the prices.

History lovers should know that the first Sunday of any month is free. And this includes the top sights like the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, and Centre Pompidou.
