Planning for the summer is always a fun experience, and you’re probably all too familiar with the most popular places to visit in the US. But sometimes, crowded beaches, long waiting times at restaurants, and overpriced cocktails just aren’t the vibe we’re going for.
We want to wake up and move at a leisurely pace, not set our alarms and rush to beat the crowds on the beach. Well, we’ve got the perfect solution! How about a location that’s a little more underrated and laid back but also breathtakingly beautiful?
Depending on what you have on your summer bucket list this year, many hidden gems all across the US will make all your planning efforts worth it.
Whether it’s a rarely-visited national park, a charming small town only locals know about, or a ski area that doesn’t get enough recognition for its warm weather offerings, we’ve included something for everyone.
So here are 4 of the most underrated summer bucket list destinations to look into for your summer vacation!

This summer bucket list destination can be found in Northern Idaho, about one hour away from the Canadian border. It’s home to Lake Pend Oreille, the 5th deepest lake in our country, and a top-notch ski resort at Schweitzer Mountain.
As far as comparisons go, Lake Tahoe is what comes to mind. But there are many things to do in Sandpoint that rival Lake Tahoe’s draws at a more affordable price and with fewer tourists.
Whether you want to spend your time on the lake, take your family to Silverwood, or to the largest theme park and water park in the Pacific Northwest, outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to this underrated destination.
Booking a place on Airbnb is an excellent option for finding affordable accommodations and allows visitors to experience the comforts of home while visiting.
This small, sleepy town is truly a hidden gem in our country, underrated even by the locals! Yachats has the unique characteristic of having dramatic coastlines, and the cozy cabin feels all year long.
It’s never busy, so it’s the ideal place if you’re looking to escape the crowds but still want to experience breathtaking views. You’ll find fresh seafood daily, and the entire town is dedicated to sustainably sourced food.
It’s only a few hours away from Portland. But it feels like you’ve traveled to another world. So whether you want to explore the incredible tide pools, get lost in the lush forests, or cuddle up with a good book, this summer bucket list destination is the place to be!
This location is one of the most underrated summer bucket list destinations in the Sunshine State. Its seven miles of sandy beaches will have you relaxing in no time. Nested between Sanibel Island and Amelia Island, it’s often overlooked.
And it’s only accessible by boat, which makes it one of the most hidden vacation spots in our country. Reaching Cayo Costa is a breeze. You can choose from three ferries from Punta Gorda, Sanibel Island, and Pine Island, or you can take your own boat to the marina park.
Once you get there, the park tram will take you across the little island to the beaches on the Gulf side. Along your way, you might find alligators, osprey, and even manatees as you check out the mangroves.
But if you want even more adventure, you can camp near the beach or rent a small cabin.
One of the most underrated summer bucket list destinations in our country is also Channel Islands National Park. This area is made up of 5 islands and can only be accessed by ferry or boat near Ventura, California.
The reason for its pure remoteness, and why these islands only get about 30,000 visitors a year, is that there is no logging available. But you can always camp on the island.
So the solitude provides you with a fantastic opportunity to explore the islands without all those pesky crowds. The spring may grace you with rich green hills and wildflowers, but the summertime is perfect for sunny weather.
The most popular of the 5 islands is Santa Cruz. Activities here include hiking to potato harbor or smugglers cove, sea kayaking, and snorkeling.
So if you are looking for a vastly hidden gem in California with minimal crowds and one of the best adventure opportunities in the US, then Channel Islands is one of OUR favorites…Just don’t forget to pack your camera!
