Most visited city: San Francisco, California

Annual number of international visitors? A whopping 2.23 million! San Francisco never disappoints and is well-known for its modern innovation and countercultural history. And in 2023, over 2.23 million international visitors came to experience what the Golden City has to offer.

With its picturesque backdrop of Pacific waters and rugged hills, the Golden Gate Bridge remains a timeless attraction, perfect for visiting any time of the year… as does nearby Alcatraz Island. Fisherman’s Wharf is also one of the city’s biggest draws, especially Pier 39, where sunbathing sea lions and shopping are all in a day’s visit.

And if you’re looking to explore beyond the city, the world-famous wine country in the nearby Sonoma and Napa valleys is only about an hour’s drive away from one of America’s most visited cities.

Most visited city: Boston, Massachusetts

With an annual number of 1.15 million visitors, this historic New England city routinely outnumbers its population of 650,000. In 2023, 1.15 million overseas visitors made the trip to Boston, with tens of millions more domestic travelers also coming to experience America’s revolutionary history.

Popular attractions include the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile path linking historic sites like Boston Common and the Old North Church, and the beautiful Beacon Hill neighborhood, with rows upon rows of brownstones and gaslit lamps that line the narrow cobblestone streets. It’s not all old-world charm in Boston, though.

The modern Seaport District, for instance, offers dynamic dining, from classic French cuisine to authentic coastal seafood, all with a picturesque view of the Boston Harbor. So we’re not surprised that this is one of our country’s most visited cities!

Beantown also boasts top-notch museums and sports fans can catch a Red Sox game at the famous Fenway Park. The baseball season rolls around right about the same time the lush Public Garden, America’s first public botanical garden, comes back to life.

Most visited city: New York, New York

9 million people visited The Big Apple in 2023, with a shocking 50 million domestic travelers also taking in the city’s famous sites. In fact, Times Square alone gets an average of 40 million visitors each year, making it the most-visited tourist attraction in the nation.

And one of the most popular attractions in the world. While iconic landmarks like Central Park and the Statue of Liberty draw tourists year-round, New York City is also a veritable cultural hub. Broadway’s theaters are iconic, while live music and comedy shows can practically be found around every corner.

Then, there are all those fantastic museums, from the Met Cloisters, the MoMA to the Whitney, and many others. Many folks visit New York City for the restaurants alone.

Fun Fact: It’s one of the cities with the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants worldwide.

Most visited city: Chicago, Illinois

Annual number of international visitors to The Windy City? 1.4 million. And Chicago’s iconic skyline brought another 50 million visitors domestically to the shores of Lake Michigan in 2023.

Travelers tend to flock to Chicago’s best-known landmarks, from Millennium Park’s Cloud Gate sculpture, aka “the Bean,” to the Willis Tower Skydeck and the Art Institute museum, the latter of which houses one of the world’s most famous collections of impressionist art.

Beyond the significant attractions, though, notable neighborhoods, including Pilsen and Wicker Park, offer live music, eclectic local shops, and food options that put the city’s neighborhood feel and creative energy on display.

If you choose to visit in the spring or summer, you can bike or stroll the scenic Lakefront Trail, an 18-mile paved path along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Most visited city: Honolulu, Hawaii

The gateway to the Aloha State, Honolulu, incorporates the natural beauty of Oahu island’s beaches with Hawaiian and Polynesian cultures… all in a booming urban setting. In 2023, 1.32 million overseas tourists visited the gorgeous city, many posting many pics near the iconic Waikiki Beach.

But beyond the skyscraper-dotted shore of golden sands and turquoise waves, Honolulu also offers travelers unique historical attractions, from Iolani Palace, the only royal residence in the nation, to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, a tribute to the devastating World War II attack.

Honolulu’s food scene is also something you can’t miss. You can take in the sights and tastes of Chinatown’s eateries and markets and also seek out fresh poke and a serving of refreshing Hawaiian shaved ice. You won’t regret it! And visiting Honolulu wouldn’t be complete without taking in its overgrown landscapes.

Even though the Diamond Head volcano is visible from Waikiki Beach, taking a hike to its summit offers exceptional scenic views of Honolulu’s coastline.

Most visited city: Las Vegas, Nevada

Annual number of overseas visitors? 2 million, folks! Sin City is well-known for its around-the-clock entertainment and glittering casinos. And in 2023, the city’s second-to-none nightlife attracted more than 2 million international visitors to the Nevada desert.

That’s definitely a high number… but it’s a mere drop in the bucket compared to the 36 million Americans who visited. The Las Vegas Strip is streaked with grand resorts, including the Bellagio, which has its renowned dancing fountains, and the Venetian, complete with gondola rides on indoor canals.

Beyond the slots, though, Vegas has also become an epicenter for world-renowned performances, from Cirque du Soleil to residencies by artists like the Eagles at the cutting-edge new Sphere venue. Are you really shocked to see Vegas on our list of most visited cities?

A quick drive away, you can also find some incredible natural attractions like Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire State Park, which offer a picturesque escape from all those city’s lights. At the same time, the downtown area provides nostalgic charm alongside the revival of many public spaces.

Most visited city: Washington, D.C.

In 2023, our nation’s capital welcomed 1.61 million international visitors on a walk through US history. And roughly 20 million additional domestic visitors visited Washington to explore major landmarks like the National Mall, frequently called “America’s front yard.”

Here, visitors can see important figures like Martin Luther King Jr and Abraham Lincoln. At the same time, the nearby Smithsonian museums will offer you countless exhibits, from the Apollo 11 command module found at the National Air and Space Museum to the Hope Diamond at the Museum of Natural History.

In the Georgetown area, travelers can explore DC’s well-preserved charming waterfront parks, post-Revolution federal architecture, and popular sweet spots like Georgetown Cupcake.

We recommend making a trip during the spring, when DC’s famous cherry blossoms begin to bloom for a short period around the Tidal Basin, creating one of the nation’s most picturesque and iconic scenes.
