These white water rafting locations are perfect for first-timers!

White water rafting is one of the best outdoor activities for group trips, whether they be newbies or experts. Rapids can be classified from 1 to 6, with 6 being off-limits for beginners. But it may be what you’re looking for if you’re an extreme sports enthusiast.

For the purpose of today’s post, though, I’d like to stick to beginner-friendly white water rafting locations. The best part is that you don’t have to travel too far to raft down some of the most incredible rapids in our country.

The US has dozens of magnificent, world-class rivers perfect for whitewater rafting for individuals and bigger groups.

So, let’s stop wasting time! I’ve made a quick list of the 8 best white water rafting locations in the US with all the beautiful views you could expect from our nation!

White water rafting location: Salmon River, Forks Of Salmon, California

California is the superstar of whitewater rafting in the US since you can go rafting in all five classes of rapids. Salmon River is conveniently located in the Klamath Mountains, an extensive stretch of wilderness, but it’s also home to the Otter Bar Lodge Kayak School.

Newcomers can take lessons in this white water rafting location or try their hands on any section of this natural river. You’ll also be likely to see various fish depending on the season, including salmon and trout, making it a worthy fishing spot.

The mere sights along this river are worth the trip alone, and with a professional along for the ride, there’s not much to worry about other than paying attention and learning the ropes of this recreation. You can also go to the 165-mile-long Kern River.

Just don’t go without an expert or guide. The lower Kern River has rapids from 2 to 3, but the upper side can go as high as five.

And if you’re more of a thrill seeker and an advanced-level rafter, check out the Tuolumne River and try out its class 4 and 5 rapids.

White water rafting location: Pigeon River, Hartford, Tennessee

The Pigeon River pours through the magnificent Smoky Mountains in Hartford, offering rafting opportunities no matter which level you fall in. With its massive drops and energetic waves, the upper side is the ultimate spot for rafting enthusiasts. The descending section of the river has lower rapids, so it’s perfect for beginners, but it’s not what this whitewater rafting location is best known for. The best rafting spot in Tennessee is the Ocoee River, which was used in the 1996 Olympic Games. The rafting season at Ocoee is pretty long. So you can visit anytime from March to October. And rafters are even allowed to try the six-hour-long Olympic route for themselves. Other activities in the area include kayaking, hot-air ballooning, and ziplining.

White water rafting location: River, Tuckasegee, North Carolina

Arguably one of the best white water rafting locations for beginners, the Tuckasegee River is also ideal for those who love engaging with nature. With peaceful, rolling waters, beginners can learn the basics while taking in all the incredible wilderness surrounding them in this southern state.

With various wildlife to look for and plenty of natural sights, this is a relaxing and thrilling trip beginners can take while visiting North Carolina. But this state has more than a dozen other popular rafting spots.

And it’s also one of the best rafting experiences for expert levels, thanks to the US National Whitewater Center that trains the Olympians.

You should also visit the Nantahala River, located just outside Bryson City, to explore the famous Great Smoky Mountains National Park while you’re in the area.

White water rafting location: Rogue River, Klamath County, Oregon

Things won’t get any wilder than going whitewater rafting at Oregon’s famous Rogue River. Rafting through Crater Lake and the exclusive entrance to the Grants Pass Area is an unforgettable time.

This white water rafting location offers everything from expert to family-friendly options, with the expert rapids going up to class 4.

The best spot for floating and paddling is ironically named Hellsgate Canyon, but the rapids aren’t above class 2 there. Other activities you can do while here include hiking, surfing, and ATV-ing.

White water rafting location: Youghiogheny River, Confluence, Pennsylvania

Ask any pro whitewater rafters about the best rivers to explore for beginners, and many will tell you that the Youghiogheny River is your best bet. It might be hard to pronounce, but it’s the community-favorite location for beginners.

This beautiful state is known in general for its fantastic hikes and river sports, including white water rafting. Pennsylvania’s terrain gives way to the ideal climate for extreme sports, and beginners can get a feel for that at this white water rafting location.

With several places to stop and take a break and lots of space to enjoy the view… and maybe even a waterfall or two, this is the perfect northeast location to try out rafting without jumping in over your head.

And if you’re already going to Pennsylvania, don’t forget to visit the Lehigh River in Weatherly, as well. It’s similar to the Deerfield River. If you time the dam release correctly, you could opt for the family experience or wild class 4 rapids.

White water rafting location: Snake River, Jackson Hole, Wyoming

OK, folks! If you’ve ever read any of my other posts, you already know… I LOVE THIS PLACE! And the reality is that whitewater rafting on the Snake River is why adventurists visit this state in the Mountain West.

Jackson Hole is an incredible place to enjoy some untamed, natural beauty and release your inner freedom. The ranges provide a sweeping view of the Grand Teton Mountains.

Plus, while you visit this white water rafting location, you can mix in activities while rafting, including Wyoming’s famous fly fishing. Other activities you can enjoy here are rock climbing, mountain biking, and hiking.

White water rafting location: Upper Colorado River, Idaho Springs, Colorado

The majestic state of Colorado is another one of the best whitewater rafting location in the US. And even though there are many places to choose from, beginners should first go to the Upper Colorado River.

This white water rafting location offers spectacular panoramic family float trips of class 2 rapids. Then, you can check out Buena Vista and paddle at Brown’s Canyon National Monument and Big Bend for class 2 or 3 rapids.

An Idaho Springs rafting trip at Clear Creek is also incredible, and it’s a mere 30 minutes away from Denver. Expert rafters and enthusiasts should try rafting on the Arkansas River in the small mountain town of Canon City.

You’ll raft through 14,000 ft high peaks and descend into the 1,000-foot-deep canyon while rafting into Arkansas.

White water rafting location: Toccoa River, Cashiers, Georgia

This state’s Chattooga River boasts one of the most challenging rapids (class 5) in the Southern part of the US alongside South Carolina. It was also a big part of the 1996 Olympic Games. Experts can try the rapids used during the games, including Five Falls, Bull Sluice, Sock-em-Dog, and Woodall Shoals.

Or, if you’re a first-timer, you can raft on the Toccoa River that runs through Chattahoochee National Forest for a breezy, family-friendly adventure. So don’t forget to pack a pair of water shoes!

The Chattooga River is also a fantastic spot for other outdoor recreation opportunities besides rafting, such as hiking, paddling, camping, and rock climbing.

Be sure to leave a comment if you’ve ever been to any of these white water rafting locations to share your experiences with us.
