Palihotel, Los Angeles

Boho Foodie

Imagine you’re starring in a comic film noir by Wes Anderson and you’ll be right at home here. Little sister to the smarter Palihouse, this economical and more stylised option is located on the cusp of We Ho. The 32 rooms have a velvety bohemian glamour and Dean & Deluca snacks in the bulging mini bars. Those with verandas overlook either the tiny courtyard (fine) or apartments across the rear alley (avoid). This is not a business hotel, so there are no room phones. You want service, more towels, a robe? Call the front desk from your mobile phone. The low lighting is moody and atmospheric – dark-green hallways, purple rooms – though not helpful when shaving or putting on make-up. The rooms border on cramped but the beds are comfortable and the showers are powerful. There is no pool and the AC is set for the whole building, which can be frustrating. Walls are thin so ambient noise can be an issue, but there’s a Thai massage room and the southern-style Hart and the Hunter restaurant serves warm buttered biscuits, market-fresh kale salad and the famous H&H smoked trout. Local Californian vineyards and craft breweries supply the drinks.
