The Solo Traveler’s Guide: 7 Safest and Most Welcoming US Cities for Seniors

Practical Planning: A 3-Day Car-Free Itinerary in Scottsdale

To show how these tips come together, here is a sample itinerary for a solo senior traveler in Scottsdale, Arizona. This plan prioritizes a relaxed pace, accessibility, and avoiding the peak desert heat. This is a model for the kind of thoughtful solo travel we encourage.

Theme: Art, Architecture, and Desert Beauty at a Gentle Pace

Pre-Trip Bookings: Book your flight into PHX and a hotel in or near Old Town Scottsdale several months out, especially for travel between January and April. Purchase a timed-entry ticket for Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West online at least three to four weeks in advance, as tours sell out. Check the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) website for their hours.

Day 1: Arrival and Old Town Exploration

Afternoon: Arrive at Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX). Collect your luggage and follow signs for the rideshare pickup area. A ride to your Old Town Scottsdale hotel will take 20–30 minutes and cost approximately $30–$45. After checking in, take time to settle in and rest.

Late Afternoon (4:00 PM): Begin your exploration. Stroll through Old Town Scottsdale. The streets are flat, and many storefronts have awnings for shade. Explore the Fifth Avenue Shopping District and the art galleries in the Marshall Way Arts District. The pace is yours.

Evening (6:30 PM): Enjoy dinner at a casual Southwestern restaurant in Old Town. Many have lovely patios for dining when the evening air cools. A meal with a drink will cost around $30–$50. Afterward, a short walk back to your hotel feels safe and pleasant.

Day 2: Masterful Architecture and Modern Art

Morning (9:30 AM): Take a rideshare to Taliesin West (about a 20-minute, $25 ride). Your pre-booked tour will likely start around 10:00 AM. Arrive a few minutes early. The 90-minute Insights Tour involves walking and some steps. If you have mobility concerns, you should call their office beforehand to inquire about their accessible tour options. The number is on their official website. Wear comfortable shoes and a hat.

Lunch (12:00 PM): After your tour, take a rideshare to a nearby cafe for a light lunch.

Afternoon (2:00 PM): Head back toward Old Town to visit the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA). It’s a compact, fully accessible museum that can be comfortably enjoyed in 60–90 minutes. It’s a wonderful, air-conditioned escape from the afternoon sun. Senior admission is discounted.

Evening: Relax. Perhaps enjoy dinner at your hotel or another nearby restaurant you spotted the day before.

Day 3: Botanical Wonders and Departure

Morning (8:00 AM): This is crucial: visit the Desert Botanical Garden right when it opens to avoid the heat. Ask your hotel to hold your luggage. Take a rideshare (10–15 minutes). The garden’s main paths are paved and largely flat, making it a joy to explore. Plan to spend 2–3 hours. The sheer variety of desert plants is stunning. There are many benches to rest and a cafe for a drink.

Late Morning (11:00 AM): Head back to your hotel to pick up your luggage. Enjoy a final lunch in Old Town.

Afternoon: Take a rideshare back to PHX for your afternoon flight home, filled with memories of the beautiful Sonoran Desert.
