The Solo Traveler’s Guide: 7 Safest and Most Welcoming US Cities for Seniors

7. Savannah, Georgia: Southern Grace and Historic Squares

Stepping into Savannah’s Historic District is like stepping back in time. With its 22 park-like squares, moss-draped oak trees, and stunning architecture, it’s one of America’s most beautiful and romantic cities. For the solo traveler, it offers a safe, walkable, and endlessly fascinating environment.

When to Go & Weather: The best times to visit are spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). The weather is warm and pleasant, perfect for walking. The city is famous for its azaleas, which peak in the spring. Summer (June to August) is extremely hot and humid and should be avoided if you are sensitive to heat.

Getting There & Around: Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) is a modern, easy-to-navigate airport about 20 minutes from the Historic District. A taxi or rideshare is about $25–$30. A car is a liability in the Historic District, where parking is scarce and expensive. The district is laid out on a grid and is very flat, making it a walker’s paradise. For a comfortable and informative way to get your bearings, a hop-on, hop-off trolley tour is an excellent investment on your first day.

Accessibility Notes: The flatness of the Historic District is a major plus. Sidewalks are generally in good condition. The famous squares provide ample places to rest on benches in the shade. The trolley tours are a great option for those with limited mobility, as they cover all the major sights. Riverboat cruises are also typically accessible. Many historic house museums, however, may have stairs and limited accessibility; it is essential to check their websites or call ahead.

Costs & Value: Savannah offers a range of options. A hotel in the Historic District will likely cost $175–$300 per night. The city is known for its fantastic Southern cuisine, with options from casual cafes to high-end dining. One of the best values is simply enjoying the city’s unique layout; you can spend a whole day just wandering from square to square, admiring the architecture and scenery, for free.

Safety & Vibe: The main tourist areas of the Historic District and the Riverfront are well-policed and generally safe, especially during the day and early evening. As in any city, it’s wise to be aware of your surroundings at night. The vibe is one of relaxed Southern hospitality. People are friendly, and the pace is slow. It’s a city that invites you to sit, observe, and soak in the atmosphere.
