The Solo Traveler’s Guide: 7 Safest and Most Welcoming US Cities for Seniors

An older woman walks down a sun-drenched, pedestrian-only brick street lined with shops and outdoor cafes in the late afternoon.

4. Madison, Wisconsin: An Isthmus of Lakes and Learning

Nestled between two beautiful lakes, Madison is a vibrant and intelligent city that offers a fantastic quality of life, which extends to its visitors. As the state capital and home to the University of Wisconsin, it has a lively cultural scene, beautiful green spaces, and a safe, walkable downtown that’s perfect for solo exploration.

When to Go & Weather: Summer (June to August) is the glorious peak season, with warm weather perfect for enjoying the lakeshores and outdoor cafes. Temperatures average 70-80°F (21-27°C). Fall (September to October) is also beautiful, with fewer crowds and crisp, colorful days. Winters are very cold and snowy, and spring can be unpredictable.

Getting There & Around: Dane County Regional Airport (MSN) is a user-friendly airport about 15 minutes from downtown. A taxi or rideshare will cost around $20–$25. Madison’s downtown is built on an isthmus, making it long and narrow, and exceptionally walkable. The main artery, State Street, is a pedestrian-only mall connecting the university campus with the State Capitol. The Madison Metro Transit system is extensive and easy to use for trips beyond the immediate downtown.

Accessibility Notes: The downtown area around the Capitol Square and State Street is mostly flat and accessible. The city has invested in good sidewalks and curb cuts. The Olbrich Botanical Gardens has paved paths, and the Chazen Museum of Art is fully accessible. The city’s bus system is equipped with ramps and designated seating.

Costs & Value: Madison provides great value. Downtown hotels average $160–$250 per night. The city’s food scene is excellent, with a focus on farm-to-table dining; a good dinner can be had for $25–$40. Many of the best experiences are free: walking the lakeside paths, visiting the stunning State Capitol building, and exploring the university campus. On Saturdays in the summer, the Dane County Farmers’ Market on the Square is a must-see spectacle.

Safety & Vibe: With its blend of government workers, students, and families, Madison has a safe, wholesome, and intellectual feel. The city is clean and well-maintained. It’s very safe to walk around the downtown and campus areas. The atmosphere is progressive and friendly, with a strong emphasis on community and the outdoors. It’s an easy place to feel comfortable and engaged as a solo traveler.
