The Solo Traveler’s Guide: 7 Safest and Most Welcoming US Cities for Seniors

A woman looks into an art gallery window on a sunlit, walkable street with Southwestern architecture in Scottsdale, Arizona.

2. Scottsdale, Arizona: A Desert Oasis of Art and Wellness

For those seeking sunshine, art, and relaxation, Scottsdale is an unbeatable choice, especially during the winter and spring months. It is renowned for its cleanliness, safety, and vast array of amenities catering to an active senior population. It is one of the best places for a single woman over 60 to travel, offering both sophisticated culture and serene desert landscapes.

When to Go & Weather: The prime season is from October to April when daytime temperatures are idyllic, ranging from 65-85°F (18-29°C) with low humidity and abundant sun. Summer (June-September) should be avoided, as temperatures regularly exceed 100°F (38°C), making outdoor activity dangerous.

Getting There & Around: Fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), a major hub with extensive flight options. Scottsdale is a 20–30 minute taxi or rideshare away (around $30–$45). While the city is spread out, the heart of the action—Old Town Scottsdale—is very walkable. For getting around the immediate downtown area, the free Scottsdale Trolley is an excellent, accessible option that services the main arts, shopping, and dining districts.

Accessibility Notes: Scottsdale is exceptionally flat and modern, making it very accessible. Sidewalks are wide and well-paved, and most galleries, shops, and restaurants are step-free. The Desert Botanical Garden and many other attractions offer paved paths suitable for wheelchairs and walkers. The Scottsdale Trolley is equipped with lifts or ramps.

Costs & Value: Scottsdale can be a luxury destination, but it also offers good value, particularly if you avoid peak event weekends. Expect hotel prices to be in the $200–$350 per night range during high season. Dining options are plentiful, from casual cafes ($15–$25) to upscale restaurants. Many art galleries in the Arts District are free to browse, providing hours of entertainment.

Safety & Vibe: The city is known for its safety and meticulously maintained public spaces. Old Town is well-lit and feels very secure for an evening stroll or dinner. The vibe is relaxed yet sophisticated. This is a place to slow down, soak up the sun, appreciate art, and treat yourself to a wellness experience like a spa day. The large number of active retirees means you’ll feel right at home.
