The Complete Guide to Visiting America’s National Parks in Retirement

An older person's hands pack a water bottle and fleece jacket into a hiking daypack on a wooden table in the morning light.

Essential Packing for Comfort and Safety

Packing for a national park trip is about practical layers and comfort, not fashion. The weather can change rapidly, and being prepared will make your trip much more enjoyable. Think of your packing in terms of a system that you can adapt to any condition.

Your foundation should be a comfortable pair of walking shoes with good traction, already broken in. Even if you plan on sticking to paved paths, you’ll be doing a lot of walking. For clothing, the keyword is layers. Start with a base layer, like a simple t-shirt. Add a mid-layer for warmth, such as a fleece jacket or a warm sweater. Finally, have an outer layer that is both waterproof and windproof. This allows you to add or remove clothing as temperatures change throughout the day, which they often do.

Sun protection is non-negotiable. The sun is more intense at higher altitudes and in desert environments. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. A small, comfortable daypack is essential for carrying your daily needs: water, snacks, sunscreen, your waterproof jacket, a park map, and any necessary medications. Also consider packing a portable power bank to keep your phone charged for photos. Finally, don’t forget binoculars for wildlife viewing and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and reduce plastic waste.
