The Complete Guide to Visiting America’s National Parks in Retirement

A person sits on a park bench looking out at a mountain range at sunrise. A water bottle is on the bench next to them.

Safety and Health Considerations for Senior Travelers

Enjoying the national parks safely requires awareness and preparation. While these are well-managed places, they are still wild environments. Paying attention to your health and your surroundings is key to a worry-free trip.

Altitude, Heat, and Hydration

Many western national parks are at high altitude, which can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness. Parks like Rocky Mountain, Yellowstone, and the Grand Canyon’s rims are over 7,000 feet (2,100 meters) above sea level. Take it easy for the first day or two to let your body acclimate. Symptoms of mild altitude sickness include headache, fatigue, and shortness of breath. The best prevention is to ascend slowly, avoid overexertion, and drink lots of water.

Dehydration is a serious risk, especially in desert parks. The air is dry, and you lose moisture without realizing it. Carry water with you at all times and drink frequently, even if you don’t feel thirsty. A good rule of thumb is to drink at least one gallon (about 4 liters) of water per person, per day. Avoid hiking during the hottest part of the day, typically from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Plan your activities for the early morning or late afternoon.

Wildlife and Trail Safety

Seeing wildlife is a highlight of any park visit, but it’s crucial to do so safely. The rule is simple: always keep your distance. The NPS recommends staying at least 100 yards (91 meters) from bears and wolves, and 25 yards (23 meters) from all other large animals like bison, elk, and bighorn sheep. Never feed wildlife; it’s dangerous for you and for the animal. Use binoculars or a zoom lens for a close-up view.

When on trails, even paved ones, be aware of your footing. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes with good grip. A walking stick or trekking poles can provide extra stability. Let someone know your plans, even if you are just going for a short walk. Cell service is often nonexistent in large parts of the parks, so do not rely on your phone for navigation or emergencies. Always carry a physical map.

Medical Preparedness

Before you go, have a check-up with your doctor to discuss your travel plans. Pack a sufficient supply of all your prescription medications, plus a few extra days’ worth in case of delays. Keep them in their original containers in your carry-on luggage. It’s also wise to carry a list of your medications, dosages, and your doctor’s contact information. Consider a medical alert bracelet or necklace if you have a serious condition. Park services have emergency responders, but medical facilities can be hours away, so preparation is key.
