The Complete Guide to Visiting America’s National Parks in Retirement

From above, an older person's hands pack a lunch on a rustic table next to a thermos, apples, and a generic map in soft morning light.

Budgeting for Your National Park Trip

While the Senior Pass helps reduce costs, a national park vacation still requires careful budgeting. Major expenses will include transportation to the region, lodging, food, and fuel for driving. Creating a realistic budget helps ensure a stress-free trip where you can focus on the scenery, not your wallet.

The primary variables in your budget will be the length of your stay and your preferred comfort level. Staying in a historic lodge inside a park will cost significantly more than a motel in a gateway town 30 minutes away. Similarly, eating at restaurants for every meal will be more expensive than preparing your own picnics.

A Simple Budget Mini-Example

Let’s create a sample budget for a 7-day, 6-night trip for two people visiting a popular park like Zion or Yellowstone, aiming for a comfortable but not extravagant experience.

Lodging: A mid-range hotel or cabin in a gateway town often costs between $180 and $300 per night. Let’s average this at $220 per night. For 6 nights, the total is $1,320.

Food: A practical approach is to eat breakfast at your hotel (if included), pack a picnic lunch to eat in the park, and have a sit-down dinner. Budgeting $80 per person per day is a reasonable estimate. For two people over 7 days, this comes to $1,120.

Transportation: This varies greatly. If you are driving your own car, budget for fuel. A 1,000-mile round trip in a car that gets 25 miles per gallon, with gas at $4.00 per gallon, would be about $160. If you are flying and renting a car, you could easily add $800 to $1,200 for flights and a week-long car rental.

Park Entry and Activities: With a Lifetime Senior Pass, your park entry is covered. Let’s add $100 for a special tour or activity.

Total Estimated Cost (Driving): $1,320 (lodging) + $1,120 (food) + $160 (gas) + $100 (activities) = $2,700, or about $1,350 per person.

This provides a solid baseline. You can easily reduce this by choosing more affordable lodging, camping, or preparing more of your own meals. Conversely, you can increase it with fine dining or stays at premium in-park lodges.
