The Complete Guide to Visiting America’s National Parks in Retirement

A person seen from behind sits at a wooden desk with a laptop, planning a trip using an online calendar in a sunlit room.

Final Pre-Trip Checklist and Next Steps

With the big picture in place, it’s time to focus on the final details that will ensure a smooth journey. A systematic approach to booking and preparation will eliminate last-minute stress and let you focus on the excitement of your upcoming adventure.

Your Action Plan: What to Do and When

6-12 Months Before Your Trip:

This is your primary booking window. First, decide on your park and your travel dates. Immediately after, book your in-park lodging or your preferred hotel in a gateway town. If you plan to fly, this is also the time to book your flights and rental car for the best rates.

3-4 Months Before Your Trip:

Check the NPS website for your park to see if timed-entry vehicle reservations are required. If so, mark the date the reservation window opens on your calendar and be ready to book online the moment they become available. This is also a good time to purchase your Lifetime Senior Pass online if you don’t plan to buy it in person.

1 Month Before Your Trip:

Begin planning a loose daily itinerary. Research which trails you want to walk and which scenic drives you want to take. Check for any ranger-led programs that might interest you. Make a packing list and ensure you have the necessary clothing and gear, such as comfortable walking shoes and a good rain jacket.

1 Week Before Your Trip:

Check the weather forecast for your destination on a site like the National Weather Service and adjust your packing accordingly. Pack your medications and a copy of your prescriptions. Download park maps to your phone for offline use, as cell service will be limited. Confirm all your reservations and notify your bank or credit card companies of your travel plans.

This simple timeline transforms a potentially overwhelming task into a manageable series of steps. By planning ahead, you gift yourself peace of mind and the freedom to fully immerse yourself in the unparalleled beauty of America’s national parks.
