Ranking the 10 Most Walkable Cities in the U.S. for Active Seniors

Budgeting for Your Walkable City Getaway

One of the great benefits of a car-free trip is saving money on rental fees, parking, and gas. However, it’s still important to plan a realistic budget. Here is a sample daily budget, in prose, for a solo traveler or a couple enjoying a mid-range trip in a city like Philadelphia or Chicago. Prices are estimates and can vary by season and personal preference.

Accommodation: Your largest expense will be your hotel. For a clean, safe, and centrally located 3-star hotel, budget approximately $175 to $300 per night. Staying in the city center is worth the extra cost, as it maximizes your walking time and minimizes transportation expenses.

Food and Drink: A reasonable daily food budget would be between $80 and $120 per person. This could break down into a $15-$20 breakfast at a local cafe, a $20-$30 lunch at a market or casual restaurant, and a $45-$70 dinner at a nice, sit-down establishment. You can save money by finding a hotel that includes breakfast or by picking up simple lunch items at a grocery store.

Public Transportation: Even in the most walkable cities, you’ll want to use public transit. A daily budget of $5 to $10 per person will typically cover a day pass or several single-ride fares, giving you the freedom to explore farther afield or rest your feet at the end of the day.

Attractions and Entertainment: This category varies widely. In Washington, D.C., most major museums are free. In other cities, plan for $30 to $50 per person per day. This could cover admission to one major museum and a smaller historical site. Always check for senior discounts, which are widely available but may require proof of age.

Total Daily Estimate: Based on these figures, a comfortable daily budget for one person is around $300 to $480, excluding flights and shopping. For a couple, it would be slightly less per person as you share the cost of the room. Booking your trip during the shoulder season (spring or fall) can often result in lower hotel rates and airfares.
