Discover A Different Side Of The Maldives

December 20, 2016 · Travel

Just a few miles south of the equator, on Gan Island, Equator Village is the ideal getaway for those in search of something out of the ordinary. And while its stunning surroundings will invite you to embrace its beauty, here you have the rare opportunity to interact with locals, learn about their culture, experience Addu hospitality first-hand and explore the Maldives style of living like never before. This is thanks to its location on the upper tip of Addu Atoll’s heart shaped landmass where the resort is cmaldives-kurumbaonnected by a causeway to the inhabited villages of the atoll.

Set amidst a tropical garden where native species like coconut, bilimbi and frangipani thrive on the manicured lawns, Equator Village is a sight to behold.

The resort offers its guests a melange of accommodation options like ocean-view rooms or quieter rooms facing the gardens.

Whether you’re a family looking for a peaceful oasis, young thrill seekers with an appetite for adventure or travel enthusiasts wanting to learn about Maldivian culture, the resort provides endless possibilities for it all. Mingle and meet locals as you make your way to the inhabited islands of Feydhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo and the capital, Hithadhoo. The atoll is the second most populated one in the Maldives, and there’s plenty to uncover. Like the famous marshy seascape of Koattey, perfect for a picturesque picnic. Or go bicycling and take pictures of the herons and crabs that frequent the atolls’ many mangrove swamps.

Alternatively, you could take a cruise to the nearby island of Hulhumeedhoo where you could visit the centuries-old mosque at Kogganu before you make your way back watching the sunset with dolphins in the background. What’s culture without experiencing the cuisine? At Equator, guests can go on culinary tours of the atoll, take part in cooking lessons provided by locals or try local delicacies like Addu Bondi (made of sweetened coconut, palm sugar and rosewater), Naaroa Faloodha (a sweetmeat made with breadfruit and flavoured with jasmine) or the famous Addu kukulhu Reha (Addu Chicken Curry) made from Addu Havaadhu, a spice mix available only in the atoll. But don’t miss the Addu Lobster, arguably the best compared to anywhere else in the Maldives. And you simply just can’t leave the Maldives without going on a diving or water sport adventure.

Equator Village features a world-class dive and water sports centre managed by Diver land, one of the most experienced scuba diving companies in the Maldives. You can opt for a variety of courses from introductory dives to more advanced courses certified by RADI. This is also one of the few places in the Madives where you could get the chance to view manta rays throughout the year. Another unmissable experience is to capture the sight of Maldives’ largest shipwreck at the bottom of the Addu channel. Other water sports on offer include: jet skis, stand up paddle boarding, windsurfing, banana boat rides, water skiing and much more.
