1. Glacier Express – Switzerland
Often called the “slowest express train in the world,” the Glacier Express is anything but ordinary.
Traveling between Zermatt and St. Moritz, this iconic route crosses 291 bridges and passes through 91 tunnels. Floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows frame snow-capped peaks, deep gorges, and postcard-perfect villages.
The highlight is the Landwasser Viaduct, a curved stone bridge that seems to float above the valley below.
Onboard dining adds a refined touch, allowing you to sip Swiss wine while the Alps glide past. What makes the Glacier Express truly special is the unhurried pace.
The journey lasts roughly eight hours, which gives you time to settle into the rhythm of the mountains. As the train climbs over the Oberalp Pass, you’ll notice how the scenery changes subtly; snow-dusted peaks giving way to alpine meadows, then to charming wooden chalets clustered in valleys below.
Even the light feels different at higher elevations. It’s a route that invites stillness. Conversations quiet down as passengers press closer to the windows. You don’t rush this experience, you absorb it, one panoramic moment at a time.
