6. San Antonio, Texas
Rich in history and culture, San Antonio is one of the most charming and affordable large cities in the United States. Its famous River Walk, the historic Alamo, and its UNESCO World Heritage missions provide a diverse range of activities that appeal to all ages, making it a great choice for multi-generational family trips.
When to Go & Weather
The best times to visit are spring (March-April) and fall (October-November). The weather is warm but not oppressive, perfect for strolling the River Walk. Spring is particularly beautiful with blooming flowers and city-wide Fiesta celebrations (though this specific period can be more expensive). Avoid the summer months if you can, as temperatures regularly soar above 95°F (35°C) with high humidity.
Getting There & Around
San Antonio International Airport (SAT) is located just 15 minutes from downtown. The downtown area, including the River Walk and the Alamo, is very walkable. The VIA Metropolitan Transit bus system is efficient and can take you to attractions further afield, such as the historic missions. The VIVA routes are specifically designed for tourists. You can purchase a day pass for just a few dollars, making it a superb budget travel tool.
Costs & Passes
Accommodation downtown can be pricey, but look for deals just outside the main River Walk loop or in the King William Historic District for better value. Expect rates of $140–$250 for a well-located hotel. The biggest cost-saver is that many of the top attractions are free. You can enter The Alamo at no cost (reservations are required), and the entire San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is also free to visit. Food can be very affordable, especially if you explore the Tex-Mex and Mexican restaurants in the Market Square area.
Actionable Tip
To see all four of the southern missions, rent a bike from one of the city’s B-Cycle stations and ride the scenic Mission Reach trail. It’s a flat, paved, 8-mile path that follows the San Antonio River and connects the missions, offering a beautiful and active way to experience this unique piece of American history for free.
