A Practical Mini-Example: 3-Day Car-Free Itinerary in St. Augustine
This sample plan shows how you can enjoy St. Augustine’s historic core without the expense and hassle of a car. It assumes you are staying in or near the historic district. This is a great example of how to save money on a vacation by focusing on walkability.
Day 1: Colonial History & The Bayfront
Morning (9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.): Start your day at the Castillo de San Marcos, the iconic 17th-century fortress. Arrive right at opening to avoid the largest crowds and midday heat. Allow 2-3 hours to explore the ramparts and rooms. It’s a 10-15 minute walk from most downtown hotels. Cost: ~$15 per adult.
Afternoon (1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.): Walk south along the bayfront. Find a casual lunch spot just off the main drag. Afterward, explore the pedestrian-only St. George Street, browsing the shops and soaking in the atmosphere. Visit the Colonial Quarter for a living history experience (optional, additional fee).
Evening (6:00 p.m. onwards): Enjoy a relaxing dinner in the historic district. Afterwards, take the free walk across the Bridge of Lions for stunning sunset views of the city. Total walking: 2-3 miles.
Day 2: Gilded Age & Academia
Morning (10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.): Walk to Flagler College, the former Hotel Ponce de León. While you can admire the stunning Spanish Renaissance architecture from the outside for free, the paid historical tours of the interior are highly recommended and offer incredible value. Book these in advance as they can sell out. Cost: ~$18 per adult.
Afternoon (12:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.): Across the street is the Lightner Museum, housed in another of Henry Flagler’s former hotels. It features an eclectic collection of Gilded Age art and artifacts. Spend 2-3 hours here. Grab lunch at the museum’s café or a nearby spot.
Evening (5:00 p.m. onwards): Explore the quieter streets west of St. George Street, like Aviles Street, the oldest street in the United States. It has a more local, artistic feel with galleries and small cafes. Enjoy a more intimate dinner here. Total walking: 1-2 miles.
Day 3: A Taste of Nature (with a little help)
Morning (9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.): While a car is needed for the beaches, you can reach the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park via a short rideshare or taxi ride (about 10 minutes, ~$10-$15). It’s a classic Florida attraction with impressive bird rookeries and, of course, alligators. Cost: ~$35 per adult.
Afternoon (1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.): Take a rideshare back towards the city, stopping at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum. If you’re able, climbing the 219 steps to the top provides the best panoramic view of the area. Cost: ~$15 per adult.
Evening: Enjoy a final farewell dinner. This day requires a small transportation budget for rideshares, but it’s still far cheaper than renting a car and paying for parking for three days.
