10. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
For a major East Coast city packed with history, art, and fantastic food, Philadelphia offers incredible value. It’s more affordable and less overwhelming than New York City or Washington, D.C., but delivers a similarly rich cultural experience. It is one of the best affordable US destinations for history buffs.
When to Go & Weather
Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) are the sweet spots for visiting Philadelphia. The weather is pleasant for walking, and the city’s parks are at their most beautiful. Summer is hot and humid, while winter can be cold and dreary, though hotel prices will be at their lowest.
Getting There & Around
Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is a major hub. The city is also a key stop on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, making it easily accessible by train. Once you’re there, Philadelphia is a fantastic walking city. The historic core, including Independence National Historical Park, is compact and easily explored on foot. For longer distances, the SEPTA transit system (subway and buses) is efficient. A day pass offers excellent value.
Costs & Passes
You can find well-located hotels for $150–$250 per night. The real savings are in the activities. All of the sites within Independence National Historical Park, including the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, are free to enter (timed tickets may be required for the Hall). The Philadelphia Museum of Art offers “Pay What You Wish” admission on the first Sunday of the month and every Friday night. For food, don’t miss Reading Terminal Market, where you can assemble a delicious and affordable lunch from dozens of vendors. And of course, a classic Philly cheesesteak is a budget-friendly meal.
Actionable Tip
Explore the city’s unique “Mural Arts Philadelphia” program, which has created thousands of public murals. You can take a self-guided walking tour of the murals in neighborhoods like Center City or South Philadelphia for a free and fascinating glimpse into the city’s culture and community.
