9. The Ozarks, Arkansas
The Ozark Mountains of Northwest Arkansas offer a stunningly beautiful and deeply underrated destination for budget-conscious nature lovers. With charming small towns like Eureka Springs and Fayetteville, crystal-clear rivers for floating, and hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails, it’s an outdoor paradise that remains very affordable.
When to Go & Weather
Late spring (May-June) and fall (September-October) are the best seasons. The weather is mild and perfect for outdoor activities, and the scenery is at its peak with either spring green or autumn color. Summer can be hot and humid, but it’s the prime season for floating the Buffalo National River. Winter is generally mild but can be gray and rainy.
Getting There & Around
Northwest Arkansas National Airport (XNA) serves the region. A car is essential for exploring the Ozarks. The roads are often rural, two-lane highways that wind through the mountains, so allow extra time for travel between destinations. The scenic drives, like the Pig Trail Scenic Byway, are an attraction in themselves.
Costs & Passes
This is where the Ozarks truly shine for budget travel. Accommodation in the form of cabins, state park lodges, and small motels is very affordable, often in the $80–$150 per night range. Many of the best activities are free, such as hiking in the Ozark National Forest or swimming in natural springs. Kayak or canoe rentals for a day on the Buffalo River are reasonably priced, often around $50–$70 per boat. Food costs are also low, with hearty, home-style cooking available at small-town diners for very little.
Actionable Tip
Visit the Buffalo National River, America’s first national river. The water is pristine, and the towering limestone bluffs are breathtaking. The Steel Creek and Kyle’s Landing areas are particularly scenic for hiking and day use. There are no entrance fees for the park.
