Savannah, Georgia: Southern Elegance on a Dime
Savannah exudes a timeless charm that feels inherently expensive. With its canopy of Spanish moss, 22 historic squares, and meticulously preserved antebellum architecture, simply walking through the Historic District feels like an exclusive tour. However, the true luxury of Savannah is how accessible it remains for budget-conscious travelers.
When to go & weather: Spring is the marquee season, but hotel prices surge around St. Patrick’s Day and the blooming of the azaleas in April. For a combination of comfortable temperatures and better hotel rates, aim for late October through November. Summer is famously hot and humid, leading to significant drops in room rates if you can tolerate the heat.
Getting around & accessibility: Savannah is one of the easiest U.S. cities to navigate without a rental car. The city operates the Savannah DOT (Downtown Transportation) system entirely free of charge. These ADA-accessible shuttles run every 15 to 20 minutes and connect the downtown area to Forsyth Park. Additionally, the free Savannah Belles Ferry transports passengers across the river to Hutchinson Island. While the city is flat, be mindful that the iconic River Street is paved with uneven cobblestones, which can pose a challenge for wheelchairs or strollers.
Costs & passes: To experience Savannah’s cultural institutions without overpaying, leverage strategic ticketing. The Telfair Museums complex—which includes the Jepson Center for the Arts, the Telfair Academy, and the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters—sells a combined admission ticket for approximately $25. The best part? This pass is valid for seven days, allowing you to space out your visits rather than rushing through all three sites in a single afternoon. Those receiving SNAP benefits can access the museums for just $3 per adult through the Museums for All initiative.

Just visited and didn’t like Santa Fe. Agree, Traverse City is a gem. Newport can be pretty pricey but is a nice place to visit. San Antonio is delightful! Hoping Savannah and Wilmington will be part of next year’s road trip.
Last time we toured the Breakers it was told that the magnificent carved front doors came from a European hotel. I said “Gee, most people just take the towels”
