3. North Cascades National Park—Washington
While Washington’s Olympic and Mount Rainier National Parks draw steady attention, North Cascades remains quietly magnificent. Sometimes called the “American Alps,” this rugged region features jagged peaks, glacial lakes, and dense evergreen forests.
Driving along the North Cascades Highway feels cinematic. Snow-capped summits rise dramatically above deep blue waters like Diablo Lake, whose striking turquoise color comes from glacial silt.
It’s a paradise for hikers and photographers, yet it remains one of the least visited national parks in the lower 48 states. The scale of the landscape feels European, but it’s distinctly American—and surprisingly uncrowded.
