The Top 10 Most Charming Main Streets in America

9. Deadwood, South Dakota

Step back into the Wild West on Deadwood’s Historic Main Street. This entire town is a National Historic Landmark, famous for its Gold Rush history and infamous characters like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. The street is lined with 19th-century architecture, much of which now houses casinos, saloons, and museums. Reenactments of historic shootouts often take place right on the street.

When to Go & Weather: Summer (June–August) is the most popular time, with warm weather perfect for exploring and attending street performances. Temperatures are typically 70–85°F (21–29°C). Fall is less crowded and offers beautiful scenery in the surrounding Black Hills.

Getting There & Around: Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP) is about an hour’s drive away. A car is essential for visiting nearby attractions like Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park. Downtown Deadwood is compact and walkable, with a town trolley available to help navigate the hills.

Safety & Logistics: Deadwood is a casino town, so it can be lively at night. It is generally safe, but always be aware of your surroundings. Accommodations can sell out far in advance, especially during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August, when prices skyrocket.

Actionable Tip: Visit the Mount Moriah Cemetery, located on a hill overlooking the town. It is the final resting place of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. The walk up is steep, but the historic significance and views are well worth it.
