5. Healdsburg, California
In the heart of Sonoma Wine Country, Healdsburg Plaza is a picture of relaxed sophistication. Unlike a traditional linear main street, the town is centered on a leafy, historic plaza. It is surrounded by world-class restaurants, chic tasting rooms from renowned wineries, art galleries, and stylish boutiques. It is a food and wine lover’s paradise with a friendly, small-town feel.
When to Go & Weather: Late spring (May–June) and early fall (September–October) offer the best weather, with sunny days and temperatures between 70–85°F (21–29°C). The fall “crush” season is exciting but busy. Summer can be very hot, often exceeding 90°F (32°C).
Getting There & Around: The Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport (STS) is just 15 minutes away. San Francisco (SFO) and Oakland (OAK) are about a 90-minute drive south. You will want a car to explore the surrounding wineries, but the downtown plaza area is perfect for walking. Rideshare services are available but can be sparse in the evenings.
Logistics & Reservations: Healdsburg is extremely popular. Book accommodations 4–6 months in advance, especially for weekends. Dinner reservations at top restaurants like The Matheson or SingleThread (if you can get one) should be made weeks, or even months, ahead. Many wineries now require tasting reservations.
Actionable Tip: Create a car-free tasting day. Many tasting rooms are right on the plaza. You can easily walk between three or four different wineries, such as Hartford Family Winery or La Crema, without needing a designated driver.
