Frequently Asked Questions About Visiting Charleston
Here are answers to a few common questions that can help you finalize your travel plans.
Is Charleston a good destination for seniors?
Yes, Charleston is an excellent destination for seniors and mature travelers. The city’s pace is generally relaxed. Attractions are focused on history, culture, and dining rather than strenuous activities. The flat terrain of the peninsula is a major plus, and the free DASH trolley makes it easy to get around without excessive walking. The abundance of guided tours, from carriages to boats, provides comfortable ways to see the sights. By planning for the heat and being mindful of uneven sidewalks, seniors can have a wonderful and comfortable visit.
How many days are enough for Charleston?
Three to four full days is an ideal amount of time for a first visit. This allows you to explore the historic district at a leisurely pace, take a tour, visit a plantation, and enjoy several great meals without feeling rushed. A long weekend of three days is sufficient to see the main highlights. If you have five days or more, you can explore more deeply, visit multiple plantations, spend a day at one of the nearby beaches like Folly Beach or Isle of Palms, or take a day trip to nearby towns like Beaufort.
Do I need to rent a car in Charleston?
It depends on your itinerary. If you plan to stay exclusively within the historic peninsula, a car is not necessary and can be more trouble than it’s worth due to difficult parking. You can easily manage with walking and the free DASH trolley. A taxi or rideshare is sufficient for getting to and from the airport. However, if you plan to visit plantations, beaches, or stay in accommodations outside the downtown core (like in Mount Pleasant), then renting a car will provide much more flexibility.
