9 American Places That Feel Like You Left The Country

Discover nine incredible American destinations that offer authentic European and international cultural experiences without the need for a passport.

1. Leavenworth, Washington: A Bavarian Escape in the Cascades

Tucked into the rugged Cascade Mountains, Leavenworth swapped its fading logging industry for a complete Bavarian transformation in the 1960s. Today, it feels remarkably like a village hidden deep in the German Alps.

You do not even need a rental car to get there; you can board the Amtrak Empire Builder from Seattle and enjoy a stunning three-and-a-half-hour ride through alpine valleys and past ancient glaciers. The train drops you at Icicle Station, just one mile from the highly walkable, compact downtown core.

Once you arrive, you will find street signs written in classic German blackletter font and bustling pubs serving massive pork knuckles alongside cold hefeweizen. The downtown area features excellent curb cuts and ramps, making it highly accessible for multi-generational families navigating with strollers or mobility devices.

Plan your visit for early October to experience their legendary Oktoberfest, or aim for late January to enjoy the snow-capped mountain backdrop without the overwhelming December holiday crowds. If you prefer to travel by bus, Northwestern Stages operates a daily route from Seattle to Leavenworth for around $65.
