8 U.S. Islands Most Americans Don’t Realize They Can Visit

May 13, 2026 · Travel
A view from a boat deck approaching a remote tropical island with white sand and dense green forest under a sunrise sky.
Crystal clear turquoise waters reveal vibrant coral reefs as a boat approaches this lush island paradise.

You do not need a passport or an expensive long-haul flight to experience some of the most remote and culturally rich islands in the world. Just off the coastlines of the United States lie quiet archipelagos, car-free wildlife havens, and historic fishing villages that completely bypass the typical tourist radar.

Whether you want to snorkel around a 19th-century coastal fortress in Florida, listen to a centuries-old maritime dialect in Virginia, or hike among wild horses on a pristine Georgian beach, these eight domestic islands offer spectacular isolation.

Trading crowded mainland beaches for passenger ferries and golf carts requires a bit of logistical maneuvering, but the unspoiled landscapes and authentic local cultures are well worth the effort.

We rented bicycles on Culebra— And a warning about the ferry there is another one to Vieques- so be sure you know which ferry you are boarding.
