8 U.S. Destinations That Feel Luxurious Without The Price Tag

San Luis Obispo, California: Golden State Wine Country Without the Markups

California wine country often conjures images of $100 tasting fees and exorbitant luxury resorts. San Luis Obispo (affectionately known as SLO) flips that script. Tucked roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, this Central Coast haven offers rolling vineyards, historic Spanish architecture, and a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere.

When to go & weather: SLO enjoys a Mediterranean climate, meaning it is pleasant almost year-round. However, spring brings vivid green hills and blooming wildflowers, making it the most visually stunning time to visit. Fall harvest season is equally magical for wine enthusiasts.

Getting there & around: For a truly luxurious start to your trip, arrive via Amtrak. The Coast Starlight and Pacific Surfliner routes drop you off right near the downtown core. The city is remarkably bike-friendly and walkable.

Costs & passes: At the center of the city sits Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Founded in 1772, it features classic mission architecture and tranquil gardens. Unlike many historic sites in California, admission to the mission and its museum is entirely free, though a small $3 donation is appreciated. They even offer free docent-led tours daily. When it comes to wine, head to the nearby Edna Valley. Tasting fees here are a fraction of what you would pay in Napa or Sonoma, and the Pinot Noirs are world-class.

Just visited and didn’t like Santa Fe. Agree, Traverse City is a gem. Newport can be pretty pricey but is a nice place to visit. San Antonio is delightful! Hoping Savannah and Wilmington will be part of next year’s road trip.

Last time we toured the Breakers it was told that the magnificent carved front doors came from a European hotel. I said “Gee, most people just take the towels”
