Wilmington, North Carolina: The Coastal Carolinas’ Best Kept Secret
Charleston and Savannah often dominate conversations about Southern coastal elegance, but Wilmington delivers a strikingly similar experience with a much lighter price tag. Set along the Cape Fear River with easy access to pristine Atlantic beaches, Wilmington offers historic mansions, a vibrant culinary scene, and maritime history in one compact package.
Getting there & around: Wilmington International Airport (ILM) has expanded its direct flight offerings in recent years, making access easier. The heart of the city is best explored on foot. The Wilmington Riverwalk is a beautifully maintained, nearly two-mile boardwalk that runs right along the river. It is entirely step-free, making it highly accessible for mobility devices.
Costs & passes: You can step inside the opulent Antebellum era at the Bellamy Mansion Museum of History & Design Arts. A self-guided tour with an audio guide costs just $15 for adults, while children ages 3 and under enter free. Instead of paying for expensive harbor cruises, take the affordable water taxi across the river for fantastic skyline views.
Crowd strategy: The area is busiest during the summer beach season and the annual Azalea Festival in early April. For a serene, luxurious experience, visit in late September or October. The ocean water remains warm enough for swimming at nearby Wrightsville Beach, but the summer rental rates drop dramatically.
Just visited and didn’t like Santa Fe. Agree, Traverse City is a gem. Newport can be pretty pricey but is a nice place to visit. San Antonio is delightful! Hoping Savannah and Wilmington will be part of next year’s road trip.
Last time we toured the Breakers it was told that the magnificent carved front doors came from a European hotel. I said “Gee, most people just take the towels”
